This morning travel north to Jerash, the best preserved Roman provincial city in the world. With your guide explore the ruins of this amazing city. Look for the chariot wheel tracks in the stones along the colonnaded street. Perform in the Roman Theatre with its fantastic acoustics. Watch the Roman Army Chariot Experience (RACE) in the hippodrome. In the afternoon, drive to Ajloun Castle. Wander through the hallways of this castle, see where the horses were stabled – stand on a parapet and look out for invading armies. Overnight: Amman.
Today we visit Madaba to see the famous mosaic map of the Holy Lands. Can you see the fish swimming up the Jordan River and away from the Dead Sea because it’s too salty for them? Next we drive to Mt Nebo where God permitted Moses to see the Promised Land before he died. From the lookout can you see Jericho, the Jerusalem Mountains and the Dead Sea? Descend the mountains into the Rift Valley and travel to Bethany Beyond the Jordan. Here Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist and the children of Israel, led by Joshua, crossed into the Promised Land. A short distance away is your Dead Sea hotel. Check-in, then “check out” all the cool features. Float in the Sea – you can’t sink – or coat yourself in the black mud you’ll find in pots along the foreshore. Once it’s dried, wash it off in the Sea. The hotel has a great kid’s fun zone pool area as well. Overnight: Dead Sea
Sleep in this morning, or go for another float in the Sea. Then following the shoreline of the Dead Sea, travel south, stopping at Lot’s Wife Pillar. Drive into the mountains to see Shobak Castle. Be a knight protecting your kingdom from the Crusaders as they attack you. Late afternoon, arrive at Petra. Overnight: Petra.
Today you are going to visit a city that was “lost” for over 1,000 years. With your guide walk the 1.2km long Siq (chasm) passing tombs, shrines and carvings along the way. Look for the Cameleer and his camels. See the Treasury, carved from the rock face, as you exit the Siq. Explore the Street of Facades and the Royal Tombs. Look into the homes carved out of the rocks, some with beautiful coloured walls and ceilings. Climb the mighty staircase to the Great Temple or over the ruins of the Temple of the Winged Lions. The rest of your day is free-time. Do you still have energy? Then take the 800+ steps up to the awesome Monastery, hidden from view in the mountains. Climb to the High Place of Sacrifice and get wonderful views down into the city. Return to your hotel via the Siq. At the museum, your guided tour ends. Overnight: Petra. Option: Learn how to cook Arabian food at “Petra Kitchen”. With the assistance of local women, prepare a 3-course dinner then sit down and eat it with your fellow chefs. You will get copies of the recipes so you can try cooking them back home.
This morning drive to Little Petra where the caravans used to rest before entering Petra or assemble before heading along the trade routes. A comfortable walk away is the ruins of a Neolithic Village (9,000 – 5,500 BC). Archaeologists have reconstructed houses to show what living at this time was like. Follow the pathway around this small village – look out for stones that have been used for collecting water. Travel to Wadi Rum, a huge desert in southern Jordan. Climb into the back of a 4WD jeep and hold on tight as you are driven across large open areas and between towering mountains. Who can climb up and roll down the huge red sand-dunes first? Stop and ride a camel – pretend you are a cameleer heading off to the Far East along the Silk Road, loaded with frankincense to trade. Overnight: Wadi Rum.
After breakfast, drive to the town of Aqaba on the Red Sea. After checking-in, explore the hotel and the kid’s fun zone. There are a lot of water sports available – the hotel’s Reception staff will be able to assist. Take a SINBAD cruise, go snorkeling, swimming or scuba diving in the reefs or take a glass bottom boat tour if you want to keep your feet dry. Other sports are jet skiing, windsurfing, kayaking and water skiing. Overnight: Aqaba
